We will be meeting at TJMC at 6:30. We will meet actually in Summit House, which is right next to TJMC on Rugby Rd . Summit House is just to the left (towards the Rotunda) if you're looking at TJMC from Rugby Rd, and there is a small parking area right in front of the house. We will be screening a movie that we hope to use in outreach activities. All are welcome!

Sojourners United Church of Christ, 1017 Elliott Avenue, Charlottesville The Interfaith Gay Straight Alliance presents a morning forum with an opportunity for fellowship and the exploration of transgender and gender identity through the screening of a film and an open facilitated discussion. Call Me Malcolm is a documentary feature about a transgender seminary student; and his struggle with faith, love and gender identity. Adam Thompson from AIDS Services Group will facilitate a discussion of the issues of gender and faith with interested and concerned members of both the faith and transgender community. Please plan to join us that morning for fellowship and conversation. Refreshments and resource materials will be provided. Pre-registration is optional but encouraged. He steps away from his safe environment and sets out on a road trip across the country visiting with many people, each of whom have a different perspective on the issues of identity, faith, and love. By the time Malcolm arrives in NewYork, his journey has covered more than just miles. And his future holds more possibilities than he ever could have dreamed. This is not a niche specific film nor a 'how to transition' film but rather a look at that universal self-seeking that we all do.

JUNE IS GAY PRIDE MONTH At SOJOURNERS UCC

This year we are planning a special month-long celebration of the inclusion of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) individuals in our community. Our youth Christian Education program will wrap up on June 3 with a play by the younger children and the honoring of students and teachers during service. Also on that day, Pastor Kathy Baker will offer a few words to introduce Pride Month and will begin a candle-lighting ceremony which weâ€™ll return to each week. On June 10 Kathy Baker will present a sermon while a member of the congregation will give her personal reflections on being a transgendered person in our Christian community. For June 17 our theme will be the â€œThe UCC: An Open and Affirming Denomination.â€ Accordingly, our focus will be on ways the United Church of Christ handles LGBT issues on a regional and national level. The UCCâ€™s Shenandoah Association Minister, will deliver the sermon and Dawg Strong will share some of his experiences. In addition, the Charlottesville Womenâ€™s Choir will perform during the service on the 17th. Worship will be followed by our annual rainbow themed Gay Pride picnic in our park. To culminate our celebrations on the 24th, Kathy Baker will speak about why honoring LGBT people and the gifts they bring is important and will reflect on one of the earliest acts of LGBT civil (or perhaps, not so civil) disobedience called the Stonewall Rebellion. Following worship that day she will lead an adult forum, â€œHomosexuality and the Bible.â€ Additional plans for the month include honoring individuals and providing LGBT resources, so be sure to mark your calendars and join us in June. IGSA Table at Q-Munity Fair May 6

IGSA will host a table at the upcoming Q-Munity Fair, May 6 2â€“5 p.m. at Gravity Lounge and Les Yeux du Monde gallery in downtown Charlottesville The table will have information about IGSA plans for the coming year, and information about friendly faith communities and organizations in the area. Stop by and say hi at this family-friendly fun event.

The struggle for equal rights for sexual minorities is not over; at our January meeting, we will discuss what the next steps will be for IGSA. We will also be finding folks to serve as co-moderators as we bid adieu to Millie FIfe and Aron Teel, who served well and faithfully since our inception two years ago.

We all learned a lot about organizing and educating through our work to stop this amendment, and those lessons will be valuable in the coming months as the long arc of social justice bends toward equality. Please come to the meeting January 18 at Sojourners UCC..

Poll Worker Training Mon., Nov. 6 at TJMC-UU

The Thomas Jefferson Memorial Church Gay Straight Alliance and Commonwealth Coalition are sponsoring a training session at the Church for poll workers for election day. The session will be followed by a phone calling party for those who can stay.

We need poll workers from 6-9am, 11:30-2pm and 4-7pm.

Tune-In & Call-In to PBS Religious Debate on Oct. 26

Too often, the religious debate around issues of equality tends to be one-sided, neglecting the fact that there is a very diverse set of religious views on the so-called â€œMarriage Amendmentâ€ and other issues facing the gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender community.

However, a special live edition of Virginia Currents on Thursday night will have panelists from both sides of the debate to discuss Ballot Question #1.

Titled â€œMarriage and Religionâ€, they will also be accepting calls from the audience during the one-hour show.

Tune-in and call-in! With less than two weeks before the election, make sure your voice is heard in this debate!
